Ancient Lacquer. Rare Wood. Genuine Stone.
Ancient Lacquer. Rare Wood. Genuine Stone.
Beads are hand-turned from hardwood and finished to show the grain. We do not claim restricted woods such as Hainan huanghuali unless a specific piece is documented as such.
A volcanic glass formed from rapidly cooled lava, left unheated and untreated to preserve its true color and clarity. Each bead is cut and polished by hand, so no two strands are exactly alike.
Applied using a centuries-old Chinese lacquer technique recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The lacquer is brushed on in many thin layers, each cured before the next, sealing the wood without masking its grain.
Clasps, spacers, and end caps are cast and hand-set in sterling silver or brass, chosen to complement the tone of each wood and stone pairing rather than compete with it.
Each bead is separated by a hand-tied knot rather than glue, so the strand flexes naturally with wear and a single loose bead never compromises the whole piece.
Notes from people who bought a piece
Sarah
Lighter than it looks
The sage green gourd necklace sits close to the collarbone and the lacquer is smoother in person. I wear it with plain shirts and it still reads as finished, not costume.
Michelle
The velvet holds its shape
Bought the Rong Hua hairpin as a gift. The petals are denser than photos suggest, and the color is richer. She wore it the same day.
Marcus
Clean knots, even beads
The lacquered bracelet arrived well packed. Beads are even, the cord is knotted cleanly, and it stays comfortable through a full day.
Elena
Slightly different, on purpose
The lacquer has small variations from piece to piece. That is what I wanted — it does not look stamped out.
David
Easy to actually wear
The gourd pendant is light enough that I forget it is on, which is the point. It has become the one I grab without thinking.
Victoria
